Light Bulb Web Design moves 260 client sites and stops watching the server

Chris Wilcox spent months asking his host for a fix. The answer turned out to be a different host.

A web design agency in Carlisle hosting 260 client websites for law, finance and property firms. This is what changed when the hosting stopped being something he had to think about.

Chris Wilcox runs Light Bulb Web Design from Carlisle, in Cumbria. The agency builds websites for large professional service firms in law, finance and property, the sort of client for whom a slow or unavailable website is not a small embarrassment. It hosts what it builds, which by 2026 meant 260 client websites.

Those sites now run on FastCow. Getting there took a decision he had been circling for months, and the thing that changed afterwards was not the thing he expected.

The challenge: ongoing problems, and no clear answer

There was no single disaster here. No server that stayed down for three days, no takedown notice that took out every client at once. Chris describes something more familiar and, in its way, harder to act on: ongoing issues over performance, uptime, and support, with his previous host, JoomlaWired.

What turned that into a decision was not the problems themselves. It was asking for a fix and not getting one.

“It was just ongoing problems, and not managing to get a clear solution alternative after asking for many months.”
Chris Wilcox, Director, Light Bulb Web Design

Months of asking is its own kind of cost. For an agency, every one of those conversations sits between two parties who are not the agency: the host who is not fixing it, and the client who only knows that their website is slow again. The agency absorbs the difference, in time and in credibility, and does so quietly.

Chris was clear about what he was afraid of when he started looking around, and it was not the new host. It was the move itself.

“That we’d have loads of issues and I’d need to spend a lot of time managing the migration.”
Chris Wilcox, on his biggest worry beforehand

That worry is the single most common reason an agency stays somewhere it has stopped being happy. Moving 260 live client websites is not a weekend job, and the person who would have to do it is usually the person already stretched thinnest. The risk of the move feels concrete and immediate; the cost of staying is spread out and easy to discount.

The solution: why Light Bulb moved to FastCow

Light Bulb's sites are Joomla, not WordPress, which rules out a good deal of the managed hosting market. The requirement was straightforward to state and harder to find: a platform fast enough that client site performance stopped being a topic, with support that answers when an agency is the one asking.

We moved the sites. The part of this we care about most is what Chris says about the thing he had been dreading.

“So much better than I expected – any of the rare issues were quickly dealt with, and the transition was so smooth!”
Chris Wilcox, on how the migration went

That is the standard we hold migrations to, and it is worth being plain about why. A migration is the only part of this relationship where an agency is exposed on our behalf. If it goes badly, their clients see it, not ours.

The results

Chris was asked what is measurably better: page speed, support response, downtime, hours back. His answer began "All of the above?" and then went somewhere more interesting than a number.

1. The performance change happened overnight

Chris describes the change in site speed as immediate and larger than he had allowed for, and he measures it in a way that will be familiar to anyone who builds sites for a living: how it feels to work on one.

“The overnight change to website performance was beyond expectation. Working on client sites now is like having them running locally – it has had a huge impact on overall website performance for visitors.”
Chris Wilcox, Director, Light Bulb Web Design

Local is the benchmark every developer holds in their head, because it is the only version with no network, no shared hardware and nobody else's traffic in the way. A hosted site that feels local is not a small compliment, and it applies to the client's visitors as much as to the person building the page.

2. Support that answers

Support was one of the three original problems and, in the ranking Chris gives, the first thing he names as better: "having much faster response times to support queries was amazing".

The difference for an agency is not really the speed of any single reply. It is that a reply arrives at all, which is what makes it possible to tell a client something true about when their site will be working.

3. The migration he was dreading

He expected to lose a lot of time to the move. He did not, and the few issues that came up were dealt with quickly enough that they did not become his problem. Our guide to migrating a client portfolio without downtime sets out the method, and the short version is that the work sits with us.

4. Backups he no longer runs himself

Chris had his own backup software, as most agencies at this size do, because the host's provision was not something he wanted to rely on. That has changed, and in the direction that matters: not "we also take backups", but that restoring is faster than the tooling he had built up himself.

“Even the improved backup provision within the server environment means I can restore faster than using my own backup software.”
Chris Wilcox, Director, Light Bulb Web Design

5. The one that is not a number

We asked for measurable improvements and said that if the honest answer was that the biggest improvement is not a number, we would print that instead. Chris gave us both, and the second one is the one he leads with.

“My constant anxiety over ‘When will the server go down again?’ was gone overnight! No more worries over dozens of clients emailing or phoning far too often, and no more having to explain ‘we’re trying to fix it’!”
Chris Wilcox, Director, Light Bulb Web Design

Two agencies, asked the same question, have now answered it the same way. Fred Campos at DFW Website Designers put it as not worrying any more, and sleeping better. Chris puts it as constant anxiety that stopped overnight. Neither answer is a metric, and both describe the same thing: the hosting stopped being something they had to think about.

Asked what is better day to day, he comes back to it again: “Peace of mind is so much better – and working on client sites probably now saves me more time than I can appreciate.”

Would he recommend it

“If you’re looking for a large-scale hosting solution backed by outstanding support, look no further.”

What Chris told us to fix

We ask every client what we should do better, and we publish the answer. Chris named something specific, and he is right about it.

“It would be nice if the site move tools catered for Joomla so I didn’t need to manually edit the configuration.php file whenever I create a new staging site from my empty Joomla plan.”
Chris Wilcox, Director, Light Bulb Web Design

His workflow is a sensible one: keep an empty Joomla install with the standard settings in place and the extensions up to date, then clone it whenever a new client site starts. Our move and staging tools understand WordPress, so that clone currently leaves him editing configuration.php by hand every time. It is a small piece of work that he repeats on every new project, which is exactly the sort of thing tooling should absorb. It is on our list.
